Estonia Liberalizes Online Gambling Market

The small country Estonia has drastically changed its online gambling policy as of 2010. With the economy down with a number close to 36%, the Estonian government saw no other option than to do what every sensible administration would do: legalize online gambling.

Global Gambling Issues
Almost every week we can write something new on the positive and negative developments in the worldwide treatment of online gambling. The Australian government recently decided to put through its 'Great Aussie Firewall', although test results appeared negative and the plans received massive public criticism.

Estonia Takes Action
Many countries have had the tax effects of legalized online gambling calculated, often times resulting in vast potential money flows to treasury. Estonia decided to take action and kill two birds with one stone: provide its citizens with a safe and regulated online gambling environment while at the same time generating additional tax income.

In the first year Estonian citizens can only gamble online on the nation-based online gambling platform of the Olympic Casino Group, which runs on the state-of-the-art software of online casino software giant PlayTech.

Further Liberalization Plans
The liberalization efforts will continue as in the beginning of 2011 the Estonian gambling market will open its virtual doors for gambling operators from all over the world. To vouch for the integrity and safety of the online gambling environment, operators must satisfy a number of additional requirements set by the Estonian authorities.
