Online Casino and Poker Sponsorship Deal Spotlight

Online Casino and Poker Sponsorship Deal Spotlight

Sponsorships by online casino and poker sites have been in the news of late as sites like 888 bolster their roster of sponsored pros, celebrities, and athletes that represent their sites.

Various sponsorship deals have been inked and renewed the last few weeks, with 888 and Titan Casino leading the way as both sites solidify the pro, athletes, and celebrities that they sponsor.

Sponsorship deals are common with both online casino and poker sites looking to increase the awareness of their brands; sponsored poker pros tend to be professional players with plenty of success on their poker resumes, while sponsored players of online casinos and sportsbooks are most often star athletes and celebrities.

Cricketer Shane Warne has been sponsored by 888 for years, making a big splash at the poker tournaments whenever he plays in major events such as the World Series of Poker and the Aussie Millions. He'll be joined by the latest athlete to land a sponsorship gig with 888, with former Spanish national team goalkeeper Santiago Cañizares signing a deal to promote 888 in Europe.

Cañizares is the second ex-football star to sign a deal with an online gaming site in recent months, with Lothar Matthäus (the former captain of the German national team) inking a deal with Poker 770 back in March.

On the poker front, Titan announced last week that it had re-signed young poker phenoms Sam Trickett and Marvin Rettenmaier to deals to promote its online poker brand Titan Poker. Trickett has earned nearly $3 million on the tournament circuit in 2011 -- including a win in the Aussie Millions high roller event -- and Rettenmaier has had his fair share of success as well.

The new membership site RISE Poker (which charges a monthly fee to play in tournaments and is open to US players) also announced its initial pro roster last week, which includes Scotty Nguyen, Jean-Robert Bellande, Maria Ho, and Dani Stern.
