Roulette Rules and Odds

Roulette is one of the simpler casino games around. After you’ve decided what to bet and put the preferred amount of chips on the table layout, there’s nothing more to do than hoping the ball will land in the right slot. But what kind of bets are there? Here we’ll run you through the rules of roulette and every type of wager the game offers. We will also present the odds for hitting a specific bet and what the payout is.

Roulette Bets – Risk vs. Reward

From an odds perspective it doesn’t matter what roulette bet you make.

A bet on “red,” for instance, will win almost half of the times and you’ll double the money. A bet on a single number will only succeed every 37th spin (European wheel), but for that you’ll get 35 times the money.

In the long run, there’s no difference between these two wagers. One hits often but only pays a little, while the other his rarely and pays a lot. After an infinite number of spins, however, you’ll end up with the same result.

So when you choose what to bet you should think about how much risk you’re willing to expose yourself to rather than making “clever” moves.

American and European Roulette

Online casinos offer both American and European Roulette. You should always go for the latter.

A typical American roulette wheel contains numbers 1 through 36, plus 0 and 00. A European roulette wheel contains the same numbers, except without the 00.

This “slight” difference is the reason European roulette is superior.

The casino gets its edge by paying you the odds of your number coming up as if there were no 0 or 00. Those extra "numbers," which distort the true odds, are what make money for the casino.

By doubling the amount of zeros, the casino nearly doubles its edge against you.

In a live casino, you have to play at whatever kind of roulette table they have. With the whole Internet to choose from, you'd be foolish to play at a roulette table that contains a 00.

Roulette Rules – Summary

So, what have we learned?

Well, roulette is a very straightforward game. You put your money down and pray that Lady Fortune will bless you with some luck. All you need to know, really, is what different bet types there are, the chance of winning, and what you’ll get back.

And of course, that you should go for European wheels

All casinos in our list of best roulette sites offer European roulette games. If you’d like to play online, we recommend you to choose one of them.
